Originally developed in England (see Northern Brewer (British)), this hop quickly became established both in the Hallertau in Germany and, later, in the United States (see Northern Brewer (American)). It is no longer grown in the U.K. in significant amounts.
In addition to being a good all-around bittering hop for German-style beers, it is the only hop used in Anchor's Steam Beer, and is often used in other beers of the same style.
