Bamberg is a city in Bavaria, Germany, famous for the production of beers using smoked malts.

Bamberg is best-known among beer lovers for Rauchbier, the smoked beer traditionally brewed there. Once it is likely that most German beers had some smoked flavor, but for some reason modern malting techniques which avoid imparting a smoky flavor to the malt were not universally adopted in Bamberg. The city today has a surprising number of breweries for a city of its size.
