While less common than barley or wheat, oats are found as an ingredient in many commercial and home-brewed beers.
Available in both malted and unmalted forms, oats add body, aid head retention, and contribute a subtle flavor and a distinctive oily mouthfeel to the finished beer.
Oats can be added in a number of forms; grits, flaked, or whole. They do not feature any diatastic properties themselves and must be mashed with base malts to convert.
