In its simplest form a hop bag is a cotton or nylon mash bag that contains the hops and is added to the boil.
It stops the hop matter blocking the syphon tube and/or entering the fermenter, resulting in clearer beer and easier cleanup.
The next generation of hop bag is a custom built hop filter.
