Cicerone is a term which has been proposed by Ray Daniels as the beer equivalent of a sommelier for wine.

The Cicerone Certification Program

The Cicerone Certification Program, expected to be launched in October of 2007, is an examination and certification program designed by author Ray Daniels to develop the five elements he considers essential for those who serve and sell beer. These are:

  1. Beer Storage, Sales and Service
  2. Beer Styles and Culture
  3. Beer Tasting and Flavors
  4. Brewing Ingredients and Processes
  5. Pairing Beer with Food

The program will initially offer three levels of certification: Certified Beer Server, Certified Cicerone, and Master Cicerone. The first level, Certified Beer Server, will be achieved by taking an exam which is administered online, with progressively more complex requirements for the other two levels.
