Infections are caused by unwanted microbes interacting the fermenting wort. This interaction can cause unwanted off-flavors and run-away fermentations thus destroying the beer. Home brewers must practice good sanitation in order to prevent these infections.

Infections are not physically harmful to humans as no known pathogens can survive in the alcohol environment present in beer.
