Hops referred to as Tettnanger have traditionally been grown in Switzerland, and were generally assumed to be the same cultivar as the famous German aroma hop Tettnang Tettnanger grown in the nearby Tettnang hop-growing region. However, in recent years, it has been discovered that these hops are genetically distinct from the German landrace and in fact are most likely Fuggle or a closely related hop.
These fake "Tettnangers" were most likely exported as "Tettnanger" rhizomes as well, and probably account for the fact that most "Tettnangers" planted in the United States and Australia also appear to be Fuggle.
