Main Page Redesign

I've put together a mockup of a suggested redesign for the wiki's main page in Talk:Main Page. Comments and contributions are welcome. --Chapka 13:05, 22 August 2007 (CDT)

Mistakes to Be rectified

There's a problem with the subcategory listings in Category:Hop varieties. See Category talk:Hop varieties for details.

--Chapka 08:14, 21 August 2007 (CDT)

The capitalization of article titles is a little bit haphazard right now, which in the long run will result in a lot of dead links. The usual wiki practice is to capitalize only the first letter of an entry unless the title is also a proper name.

For example, right now if I type: "Irish ale is usually not brewed with 6-row malt", neither of the links work, even though there are pages for both Irish Ale and 6-Row Malt. To get to those pages, I have to use a pipe to the capitalized version in every link.

The easiest solution is to make sure that you create lowercase redirects for any uppercase-titled pages, but in the long run it would probably be better to standardize the articles themselves.

Help Requested

I'd like to make the Abbreviations page into a category page like malt etc. I've made the Category page but how do I get the original Abbreviation link point to the abbreviation category rather than the abbreviation page?--Orfy 05:11, 16 March 2007 (CDT)

To link to a category you put a semi-colon in front of the category name in the link. E.g. [[:Category:Abbreviations|Abbreviations]]. Without the leading semi-colon the wiki will just include it in the category instead of treating it like a link. --Bradsul 08:23, 16 March 2007 (CDT)
Sorry I didn't actually answer your question. :) You would want to use what I said above, and set a redirect on the old page. #REDIRECT [[:Category:Abbreviations]]. I updated the only couple articles that were pointing to the abbreviations page to point to the category in this case. --Bradsul 08:25, 16 March 2007 (CDT)

Additions Requested/Suggestions

It looks like some backend stuff needs to be done in order to allow embedded youtube videos. I tried embedding my aeration time lapse as the youtube directions suggest and it doesn't work. The code just gets displayed. Check this out: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:YouTube_%28Iubito%29 Bobby M 14:11, 14 February 2007 (CST)

As detailed here:http://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=29881 I think it might be wise to have a forum help section. --Olllllo 16:39, 17 May 2007 (CDT)

Unless somebody beats me to it I will get started on this tonight. --Bradsul 16:55, 17 May 2007 (CDT)

Current Projects

I'm currently working on two projects:

  • I've created a new, more complete template for hop information and am in the process of filling in information for some of the hop varieties. See the Cascade page for an example. I'm also filling in some of the hop-related pages at the same time. --Chapka 08:50, 14 August 2007 (CDT)
Update: I've finished most of the existing hop variety pages and stubs and added a few more, plus a new Hop varieties page; once they're finished I plan on tackling the main "Hops" page, and possibly some of the other pages, like Hop Cultivation. --Chapka 10:53, 21 August 2007 (CDT)
Update: I've finished rejigging the categories, and so removed my discussion of it above. I still plan on going back through and changing "Ingredients" to "Beer Ingredients" at some point. --Chapka 13:05, 22 August 2007 (CDT)
  • I'm trying to think of a way to reorganize the information on malt and grain types to be more inclusive and informative. As part of this, I've been working on a new grain page which may eventually replace the current malt page, with subpages describing and listing the various malt types and subtypes (kilned malts, grits, and so on). --Chapka 08:50, 14 August 2007 (CDT)
This one's been on the back burner a bit as there was more work than I expected in doing the hops. I'm sure I'll get back to it eventually. In the meantime, I'm thinking of tackling the Beer styles pages (see the new Category page and its talk page for details.--Chapka 10:53, 21 August 2007 (CDT)

The wine page is just a skeleton at this time. Any wine making experts willing to work on it would be greatly appreciated.
The cider page is in progress, but incomplete.--Torchiest 11:31, 11 February 2007 (CST) The mead page has basic, and needs a lot of work.

More specifically, the sub-categories of mead need pages and descriptions.--Torchiest 19:31, 27 February 2007 (CST)
We also need comments on the structure, layout and the way it's looking.
We need more pages like the whirlpool page.
Detail pages on chillers and other gadgets would be good.

I've been adding to the keggle and chillers here and there.Bobby M 23:04, 13 February 2007 (CST)

It'd also be great to have some stuff like individual brewers set ups.--Orfy 13:33, 11 February 2007 (CST)

I put up basic information on the Yeast Starters page. If anyone would like to take a series of photos of themselves going through the process, and put them up, it would really help a lot. --Torchiest 18:45, 11 February 2007 (CST)
There is now a hops template available. Look in the discussion section of the hops page. --Torchiest 03:29, 12 February 2007 (CST)
I have finished the malt template. It's in the discussion section of the malt page. --Torchiest 09:47, 13 February 2007 (CST)

Just so that it is actually said somewhere, the Malt page is deprecated and has been replaced with the Malt category (available here). I've protected the original Malt page from editing until either existing links are changed or a redirect is set (will hopefully take care of this tonight unless someone beats me to it). --Bradsul 15:26, 29 March 2007 (CDT)

I'm going to be washing my belgian wit yeast soon, I'll take pictures and document that as it goes along. --z987k 04 May 2007
